Overwhelmed doesn’t really describe it accurately enough, but I don’t know what other words to use. As reported, I am in a tough battle with an aggressive cancer that has taken up residence in my neck and, while the first round of chemotherapy went well, I will be starting another five-day session of chemotherapy this weekend and still have the stem cell transplant and all that to go after that. It is all quite incredible and the whole thing came on so remarkably fast that I have had a struggle trying to get a grip on it all.  All kinds of questions … all kinds of feelings.

I’m learning a lot through all of this and not all of it is medical in nature. Mostly, I think I am learning that in a pretty tough, unforgiving, cut-throat world, there are some very wonderful people and I have been overwhelmed by them. As a man of faith, I am also learning (and leaning) more about that as well. I hope to one day write up a recap of my journey but, for now, I just need to say thank you to all of you who have reached out in one form or another during these past several days. You will never know what your words of affection, encouragement and humor have meant to me.

Right now, I am hanging in and not sleeping as much as I was there for a while. I plan to include a “Cancer Corner” story or two each week probably starting in October and many of you will see your names mentioned there from week to week. For now, I covet your prayers and I ask you to accept my heartfelt thanks for all you have done for me. You have humbled this old Irishman in ways I cannot describe. And I love you all the more for it.

 I Really Have Solved It

And as stated two weeks ago, I have submitted my full investigative report with my recommendations to the fine people at USGlass Magazine. I speak here of my incredibly in-depth review and hard hitting report on what we need to do to fix The U.S. Postal system. Unfortunately, I got a little confused about the timing of all of this and had stated in this very blog that my write-up would come out in the August issue of USG. Well, the August issue came out and there was nothing in there about the

postal thing and so now a few alert readers have made contact wanting to know where it is … the report that is. OK, I was wrong. I missed the deadline for the August issue (great issue by the way) but have been assured that my hard hitting, insightful and incredibly poignant report will indeed be printed in the September issue. I apologize for the mix-up. I just got too excited I guess.

Last Time

I promise that I will do my best not to bring this up again (until at least after the new year), but it is good filler for me this week and besides, the more I read the book, the more I like it. I refer here of course to Paul Bieber and his terrific new book, 5 Minute Consultant. As you may recall, I had publicly reminded Paul that I was the very first person to buy his book (for cash no less) months before it would come out. I wanted to be the first and Paul is such a good writer that I had no doubt it would be good and it most certainly is. Now I am not totally sure how you can order one but Paul can be reached at pbieber@fiveminuteconsultant.com.

The Sports Thing

Sure I know the NFL Season starts officially this weekend but much more importantly, the NHL preseason starts in less than two weeks. I need hockey … especially in trying times like these.

The Quotable Thing

Didn’t have time to really get into this so I came up with one of my own. Here it is … forgive me please, but remember I am heavily drugged now.

Typical. I had said we would post a little update on your blog today and you said you would write it. We then just asked you for a paragraph and you give us a book!!! I thought in your ( by your own admission) heavily drugged state you might actually follow directions … but no. Situation normal. Seriously, Lyle don’t want you to spend any energy on anything other than getting better. So please at least follow directions on that one!
